Abstract	This project aims to the development of a monitoring network in crops and forests to detect quarantine organisms, and to take the proper measures for their eradication or to limit their spread. The surveys are intended to protect the plant production of Greece from the invasion and dispersal of alien organisms harmful to plant health. This is also an obligation under the terms of Greece’s harmonization with European Union Plant Health Legislation. Survey activities include: a) the drafting and publication of methodologies, b) the production of guidelines for macroscopic control of a large number of quarantine organisms, c) the provision of training programs for plant health controllers, and d) the examination of samples of plant material. Another obligation is the production of annual reports on the results of the completed checks, and the formal measures taken in each case. Surveys take place for two categories of quarantine organisms. The first is related to those organisms with regards to which Greece is protected zone. These organisms include the following insects: Dendroctonus micans Kugelan, Ips amitinus Eichhof, I. cembrae Heer, I. duplicatus Sahlberg and Gilpinia hercyniae (Hartig) in conifers, Gonipterus scutellatus Gyll in eucalyptus species and Anthonomus grandis (Boh.) in cotton. Also in cotton, the fungus Glomerella gossypii Edgerton is monitored, as well as the bacterium Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens in beans and the virus Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in citrus trees. The second category deals with those organisms for which special measures have been decided for their eradication or for the limitation of their spread within the European Union. These include the insects Diabrotica virgifera Le Conte in maize, Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu in chestnut-trees, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) in palm species, Anoplophora chinensis (Forster) in a large number of cultivated, forest, and ornamental tree species and Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) in cultivated plants of Solanaceae family. Nematodes in this category are Globodera pallida (stone) Behrens, Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber), Meloidogyne chitwoodi Golden et al., M. fallax Karssen, Ditylenchus destructor Thorne in potato,and Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Bührer) Nickle et al. in coniferous species and wooden packaging material. The mite species in this category is Eutetranychus orientalis Klein on citrus-trees. Bacteria include Clavibacter michiganensis (Smith) Davis et al. ssp. sepedonicus (Spieckermann and Kotthoff) Davis et al. in potato, Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) Smith Yabuuchi et al. in potato and tomato, and Erwinia amylovora (Burr.) Winsl. et al. in pip cultivations. For phytoplasma Potato stolbur mycoplasm in cultivated plants of Solanaceae family. For fungi Synchytrium endobioticum (Schilb.) Perc. in potato cultivation, Phytophthora ramorum Werres et al. in a large number of cultivated, forest, and ornamental plants, Ceratocystis platani (Walter) Engelbrecht et Harrington in plane-tree species and Gibberella circinata Niremberg & O’ Donnell in conifer species. For Pepino mosaic virus in tomato and Potato spindle tuber viroid in tomato, potato, and ornamental plants of Solanaceae family Brugmansia Pers. spp. and Solanum jasminoides.
