Programme title: Eco-Epidemiological Intelligence for Early Warning and Response to Mosquito-Borne Disease Risk in Endemic and Emergence Settings
Funding Source: Horizon 2022
Coordinator of the project: Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas
Funding amount: 100%
Start Date: 1/1/2023
End Date: 31/12/2027
Duration: 4 years
The purpose of the project is, through its interdisciplinary nature, to contribute in an innovative way to the implementation of "One Health" which is required to deal with the spread of zoonotic diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. Data generated from the study of interactions between humans, vector mosquitoesand the environment will be used to produce predictive models of mosquito-borne disease risk in an ever-changing and globally connected environment. Mosquito-Borne Diseases – MBDs can create significant problems for public health and society in general. They represent a large share of the total burden of vector-borne diseases that endanger 80% of the world's population with 700,000 deaths annually. Of particular concern are diseases caused by dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Zika virus (ZIVK), West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV). The spread of these diseases in Europe is facilitated by both native and invasive mosquitoes acting as transmitters. Culex includes the main transmitters of WNV and USUV, while Aedes includes the transmitters of DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV. Populations of all these transmitters are directly affected by changes in land use, water management, and social and climate factors.

Programme title: Strenghtening Phytosanitary Research Programming and collaboration: From European to Global Phytosanitary Research Coordination
Funding Source: Horizon
Coordinator of the project: European Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO)
Funding amount: 100%
Start Date: 1/12/2023
End Date: 30/11/2026
Duration: 3 years
The project is implemented with BPI participating as a partner and is fully funded by the European Commission within the framework of Horizon. Building on the foundations established by the Euphresco self-sustained network, the EUPHRESCO III project aims to enhance national and regional phytosanitary research coordination and lay the groundwork for global phytosanitary research coordination through tailored activities.
The objectives of the EUPHRESCO III project are as follows:
•Develop a strategic agenda for medium-term (5–10 years) phytosanitary research priorities. This agenda will guide the research programming activities of project partners and support them in addressing national, regional, and global challenges by fostering synergies across regions and continents.
•Organize joint calls on common research priorities to support and enhance international collaboration. This will involve commissioning and implementing research projects that meet the needs of research funders and policymakers.
•Design and test governance models for the structure and operation of a global network for phytosanitary research coordination. A business plan will be created to guide the development of this global network.
•Engage with target groups to promote knowledge exchange, encourage involvement in project activities, facilitate co-development, and ensure the dissemination and adoption of project outputs.
