Laboratory of PESTICIDE RESIDUES
The Laboratory implements a Quality Assurance System in the experimental trials since 2002, and it is currently certified by the National Accreditation System (ESYD) in ISO 17025:2005 (Accred. No. 97) to conduct a series of experimental tests.
Since 2004, the Laboratory of Pesticide Residues has operated as the National Reference Laboratory in four areas: residues of pesticides in i) fruits, vegetables and grains, ii) in animal feed, iii) in products with high fat content, and iv) Single Residue Methods (SRM).
Research Activities
The Laboratory is engaged in research in the following areas:
- Coordination of the Greek official control laboratories for pesticide residues, and providing technical support to these and to the responsible bodies, such as the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, and the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET).
- Developing new methods for determining levels of pesticide residues.
- Studies and analysis to determine levels of pesticides residues in agricultural products for the purposes of consumer protection. Also for determining maximum permissible residue levels and the ‘last safe moment’ for intervention prior to harvest, according to the conditions in our country.
- Studies of pesticide residues and other contaminants in surface and ground water.
- Organizing courses, seminars and training for laboratories of official controls on analytical techniques and quality issues.
Training
The Laboratory of Pesticide Residues is actively involved in the training of students from affiliated universities. Undergraduates come to the Department to gain practical experience or for the implementation of their final-year projects. Postgraduate students are able to undertake their own research projects, leading to the attainment of MSc and PhD degrees. The Department also trains subject-matter professionals, including farmers, agronomists and analysts.
